We report a lot of craziness on the BedBugNewsReports.com, but this is a first. Michael Gallagher [62 y/o] killed his mother Patricia Ann Gallagher [89 y/o] because he was afraid BedBugs would get his mom kicked out of her housing, and she’d have to come live with him.

Like most of the commentary here, we can only work with the “facts” offered up by the local press, but this one is pretty sad. Michael Gallagher has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother. Bail was set at $2 million, so he’s not goin’ anywhere.

Prosecutors say he admitted to killing his mom, because he was upset that a bedbug outbreak would get her kicked out of her home. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Momma Gallagher died of “complex homicidal violence.”… which is the technical term for “{getting’ beat over the head with a statue of your son}”.

As sad as this is, [and it’s pretty damn sad], there is some stuff we can learn here….. [besides: #1, If you beat your Momma over the head with a statue of yourself she will die and you will go to prison]

The reality is, awareness of BedBugs will allow you to detect the problem early, and get the older/weaker folks in your life some help. If you have elderly friends or relatives, Check on them, often and look for the signs of BedBugs. [You can read how to do that elsewhere on the BedBugNewsReports web site] Many elderly folks may be non-reactive to BedBug-bites, or not notice them, because “everything itches and aches, when you are old”. [I actually had someone tell me that one time, when we were inspecting an assisted living facility] . Do NOT assume paid elder-care is paying attention. BedBugs in assisted living facilities or hospitals and VA housing is rampant too.

Here’s another point: Most cities/ counties now have laws in place that prevent landlords from evicting tenents because of BedBugs. Landlords hate Bedbugs more than renters, because in many places it is their responsibility to pay for pest control… which includes Bedbugs. In fairness, BedBugs are hitch-hikers, so the tenants bring them into the apartment…. [or the neighbor’s infestation is so large they migrate from next-door.] Either way, Fighting BedBugs is not fun and NOT CHEAP.
