Did you hear the news? Syracuse is playing in the BIG LEAGUES… but not for reasons the Mayor or the Chamber of Commerce are proud of. BedBugs in Syracuse have gotten so bad, we are ranked #21 on the new list of “Top 100 Most BedBug Infested Cities”. This isn’t news to anyone living in a rental unit around here, and we are not alone. New York City is ranked #10, Buffalo is #28 and Albany is #42.

With all the BedBugs in Syracuse, you would think “someone” could/would do “something”, but that’s not the case. Syracuse Code Enforcement Director Corey Driscoll is quoted by Jim Kenyon in a CNYcentral article as saying that “Codes” and the Syracuse city “legal dept” are trying to find a way to make Landlords more aware of BedBug infestations, require BedBug treatments and be quicker to respond to BedBugs in Syracuse apartment units. There are no current city codes that require landlords to tell tenants if the apartment they are renting has a history of BedBugs. [Editor- read our newsletter -“13 Things LandLords should Know About BedBugs”- at www.FLfresh.com ] “Notifications” like that are required in other cities and it’s one of the things that Syracuse Code Enforcement could do.

The BedBugs in Syracuse are not a new problem, BedBug News Reports looked back in our archives and found the city was ranked #23 on the list in 2011.

Sharon Sherman is Director of the all-volunteer Greater Syracuse Tenants Network. BedBugs are her Number #1 call-in complaint and says BedBugs in Syracuse are an “epidemic.” She was quoted by James Mulder /Syracuse Post-Standard, who was writting about the “Top 100” list too. The GSTN has organized workshops for landlords, to help them combat the problem, but the entire city is at risk. not just rental apartments.

BedBugsdon’t discriminate, any human is a “tasty-treat”. We are the only food source they eat, so BedBugs in Syracuse are here to stay. There are ways to make sure they don’t stay at YOUR HOME.
