5 things you need to know about hotel rooms article, includes Bedbugs [again] but not for the “right” reason.

USAtoday is out with [another] headline grabbing story. They hope it will grab readers [it must have worked, because here I am talking about it], but the facts are a little light. “McPaper” has always been accused of being light on substance in the “news” department, but this article seems designed to just be a PR/support piece for union-housekeepers in the major cities…. with a little “hate” for BedBugs thrown into the mix. I guess I’m overly sensitive, but these “5 myths about hotel housekeeping” do NOT really seem to be…. Umm… myths…. And the “facts about Bedbugs” are missing.

I’m MrBedBug, Chief SpokesBug for FLfresh.com and EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. I am a TV star on MrBedBug-TV and the Editor of the Bedbug News Reports.com

I’m not disputing the thesis that hotel housekeeping isn’t a tough and tedious job. Just like the old joke about how people drive rental cars, everyone uses hotel rooms like that too. I get it, but isn’t that the “job description”. Come on! We all know “sanitation engineers”, chemical plant workers and other “nasty jobs” exist. In fact, “TV regular guy”, Mike Rowe has found TV fame with a “Dirty Jobs” show on the Discovery Channel that does nothing but celebrate these “your life could be worse” jobs of all types. Watch episodes HERE

So back we return to the USA today article that you can read HERE. I spend a LOT of time in hotel rooms, both literally and figuaratively [since I am Mr BedBug after all] I do like the idea of a “tip envelope” for housekeeping, and […]

Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA

There is a scene in the Steve Martin comedy movie [called “The Jerk”] inwhich the character [Navin R. Johnson] is overly-excited by the arrival of the new phonebook. He thinks he is “somebody”, because his name is in print. The old saying, “any publicity is good publicity” does NOT always apply….. like when the new annual “Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA” list is published.

Contrary to what “Navin” believes [“This is the kind of spontaneous publicity that “makes people”] most Mayors, Chambers of Commerce and City Health Departments would rather NOT be recognized for the inglorious achievement of being on the list, but there they are. Both Orkin and Terminex play this game with PR/news releases as a way to hype the franchise pest control services they sell. The list are not really very scientific, but actually based of the number of service calls received in each city. This introduces reporting variables that have nothing to do with the level of BedBug infestations, but lets allow them to have their “fun” at the expensive of Municipal reputation all across the USA.

Here is the Top 50 Most Bed Bug Infested Cities List [per the newest Orkin press release.]

1. Chicago Il (moving up +1 spot to be the New #1, like Casey Kasum used to say)
2. Detroit MI (up +1)
3. Los Angeles Calif (up +2)
4. Denver Colo (holding steady at #4)
5. Cincinnati Ohio (down the list -4 places, but everyone else in Ohio is “catching-up” fast. )
6. Columbus, Ohio (still ranked #6, but workin’ hard to break that Top 5 goal.) […]

Trained dogs find BedBugs in Dallas

Lots of news reports tell you where Bedbugs have been found. When the national pest control companies release the “Top 50 Most BedBug infested Cities” list, Local reporters at newspaper and TV stations across the USA have a field day. We’ve all seen those reports, but all you really care about is: How do you know if you have BedBugs in YOUR home.

I’m Mr BedBug, [the Chief SpokesBUG for FLfresh.com.] That’s the #1 question I get in my e-mail and on social media [contact me @ my accounts, listed below] The press coverage about BedBugs tends to cause some panic, because reporters are always looking for the most attention-getting “angle”. There REAL job is to get viewers/ratings, NOT to deliver real accurate information. That’s a little harsh, because most reporters try to do a “good job”, but they aren’t experts on every subject and after finishing a news report on BedBugs today, they will talk about home improvement scams or potholes on the highway tomorrow. That’s the nature of the job, as a local news reporter.

These BedBug News Reports pages are design to help you learn from the mistakes of others. We also use it as an out-reach to local reporters to help them learn the facts, and stop repeating some common myths about BedBugs. When we see a “winner”, we tell them so too.

Rebecca Lopez of WFAA-TV /Dallas has a very nice, concise report about BedBug-sniffing dogs. We are used to drug-dogs and bomb-dogs, because of those very real inspection needs, but BedBugs “stink” too. […]

2012 is “The Year of BedBugs” in Dallas /Fort Worth

Every year, Orkin the pest control people put out a press release. It “honors” the Top 10 BedBug Infested Cities. Up until now, we dodged the bullet in Dallas / Fort Worth, but not any longer. I doubt crowds will gather outside the stadium and cheer: We’re #7, We’re #7 !!

BedBugs are back with a vengence nation-wide and it looks like Dallas / Fort Worth is an “up and comer”, because of a lack of awareness. BedBugs travel by clinging to any fabric that smells like humans. We are their only food source, so they must stay close. When a city doesn’t make prevention a priority, with treatments and awareness, an explosion of BedBugs infest the entire metro, like has happened this year in Dallas / Fort Worth.

How did Dallas / Fort Worth become #7 of the list of The Top 10 Most BedBug Infested Cities? It is actually pretty easy. BedBugs don’t discriminate. They feed on human blood, anyone will do. They will bite “the rich” and poor, kids and old-folks, in any neighborhood around here. Everyone is at risk, because BedBugs are now so common in Dallas / Fort Worth. D-magazine may question the motives of the folks at Orkin, and MrBedBug doesn’t disagree with that conclusion. http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2012/03/16/dallas-fort-worth-no-7-with-a-bullet-onnational-bed-bug-infestation-list/

The national pest control companies use these press-releases for publicity. Jason is right, it’s not very scientific in how they rank cities as the #1 to #50 or Top 100 Most BedBug Infested Cities. The problem is: […]
