illinois infestations of bedbugs
I often editorialize about “local” press and how they are predictable in their news coverage of BedBugs. The same is true of Lice, but maybe this time there really is news.
Hello, my tasty-human friends. I’m Mr BedBug, Chief SpokesBug for FLfresh.com and EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. I am a TV star on MrBedBug-TV on YouTube and Editor of the BedBug News Reports.com
There is new research showing that lice [ the other un-popular blood-sucker] are beginning to mutate and become immune to the common “pest-control” treatments. This is the troubling results from the work of Dr Kyong Yoon of Southern Illinois University. Yoon [and his colleagues] have been studing multiple populations of lice collected from professional “nit-pickers” across 30 states.
As a side note: WHO KNEW those careers existed !! “What do you want to be when you grow-up, Johnny?” Ooh,oOhh… I wanna be a NIT-PICKER !! Don’t we already have enough of those in Washington DC? LOL
Any-way. Dr Yoon’s work shows a population evolution that in-breeds resistance to the most commonly used pyrethroid treatments. [That’s the active ingredient in those hair-shampoos your kid’s schools and Dr’s offices suggest you buy/use.
SO… Why am I [the famous Mr BedBug ] blogging about Lice, instead of the latest BedBug Treatments? It’s because this is further evidence that the “same old” toxic pest control treatments are become limited in their effectiveness. I have posted over and over that BedBugs have long been generationally-evolving, becoming more and more immune to the ever-more toxic “sprays” that the traditional franchise pest control companies want to use. You’ve read many other […]
We teach our children to work and play together, but I’m not sure learning to co-exist with BedBugs in Chicago -land is such a great idea, especially since Chicago is one of the Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA.
Hello my tasty-human friends. I’m General BedBug, Commanding Officer of the BedBug Resistance Army and “battle consultant” to FLfresh.com and , EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. You can follow my “war-room” briefings to see how the battles move from city to city. I am @GeneralBedbug on the Twitty-Toy and I do postings like this one on MrBedBug’s YouTube Account @ MrBedbug TV.
I see a LOT of silliness on the internet, but a kid’s play about Bedbugs? OK, Am I the only one that thinks it’s a little odd?
The drama club at Kerkstra Elementary in Oak Forest Il [that’s metro Chicago for everyone else] did a performance of a play called “Bed Bugs !”.
Since I am [the famous] General BedBug, I thought I was pretty well informed about the state of the “war” my entomologically-challenged “community” is fighting…. but a kid’s play?
I’ll skip my first question, [which was: they have “drama clubs” in 5th grade?] and jump right to the second. Is it really a good idea to teach children to co-exist with BedBugs? I realize the social-stigma attached to BedBugs in Chicago homes and apartments in usually unfair.
[BedBug DO NOT spread disease, like ticks, mosquitos and nasty cockroaches], but I think teaching kids [and parents] the real […]
Just like the Oscar awards ceremony and the SuperBowl, once per year it’s time for the annual Top 50 Most Bedbug Infested Cities “competition”. Can I have the envelope? please. These are the cities that will get the most local TV and newspaper coverage of the Bedbug Wars, in the next few months, on the BedBugNewsReports.com

5 things you need to know about hotel rooms article, includes Bedbugs [again] but not for the “right” reason.
USAtoday is out with [another] headline grabbing story. They hope it will grab readers [it must have worked, because here I am talking about it], but the facts are a little light. “McPaper” has always been accused of being light on substance in the “news” department, but this article seems designed to just be a PR/support piece for union-housekeepers in the major cities…. with a little “hate” for BedBugs thrown into the mix. I guess I’m overly sensitive, but these “5 myths about hotel housekeeping” do NOT really seem to be…. Umm… myths…. And the “facts about Bedbugs” are missing.
I’m MrBedBug, Chief SpokesBug for FLfresh.com and EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. I am a TV star on MrBedBug-TV and the Editor of the Bedbug News Reports.com
I’m not disputing the thesis that hotel housekeeping isn’t a tough and tedious job. Just like the old joke about how people drive rental cars, everyone uses hotel rooms like that too. I get it, but isn’t that the “job description”. Come on! We all know “sanitation engineers”, chemical plant workers and other “nasty jobs” exist. In fact, “TV regular guy”, Mike Rowe has found TV fame with a “Dirty Jobs” show on the Discovery Channel that does nothing but celebrate these “your life could be worse” jobs of all types. Watch episodes HERE
So back we return to the USA today article that you can read HERE. I spend a LOT of time in hotel rooms, both literally and figuaratively [since I am Mr BedBug after all] I do like the idea of a “tip envelope” for housekeeping, and […]
I know I shouldn’t do it, but some of these headlines just write themselves. United Airlines found Bedbugs in the corporate HQ offices, but other businesses can learn an important lesson from this.
I’m MrBedBug, Chief SpokesBug for FLfresh.com and EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. I am a TV star on MrBedBug-TV and Editor of the BedBug News Reports.com
The airline PR staff probably has a problem to “fix” when TIME magazine reports that there are Bedbugs at United Airlines corporate HQ. We’ve discussed many times that BedBug are hitch-hikers, so finding “my cousins” on the seat of an airplane isn’t rare. It’s also not rare to find Bedbugs in a corporate office environment, but sadly when the traveling public hears this news, I would NOT be surprised if “my team” doesn’t get a cheering section.
BedBugs do NOT spread disease or cause any real health issues for humans, but when it comes to “panic factor”, we Bedbugs are top of the list. Mosquitos and ticks spread disease. Bees and wasps sting and hurt. Even lowly cockroaches get a big “Euwee” !! , if seen in the wrong place, but the Bedbug PR is the worst.
Reading between the lines, Here’s what you need to learn from the – Bedbugs in the United Airlines HQ offices – headline.
Don’t try to be tricky or hide the discovery. The gossip always leaks out. In the “vacumn” of real information, people will make something up to fill the news-pipeline. What gossips make-up, will ALWAYS be worse than the real story. Chicago is one of the Top […]
The BedBug News Reports shares a lot of information about the press coverage of Bedbugs and how people react. We hope you learn from the mistakes of others, so YOUR Bedbug exposure is low and any infestation is quickly cleaned, before it becomes a huge infestation. Today’s news story offers lots and lots of “teachable” moments.
Here’s the short version of the story.
A high school tennis coach and her girls tennis team travels to Palatine Illinois, near Chicago and found BedBugs in her hotel room. Evidently the hotel informed her that she would need to change rooms, the second day, because of Bedbugs in the first hotel room. The details are a little thin in the news report and so we are forced to leap to some assumptions, never a good idea, but here we go. [also notice we are not reporting this woman’s name]
The coach went to a local walk-in clinic, because she had BedBug bites on her hands, arms and shoulders. The Doctor(s) told her she would have to cut-off her dreadlocks, to get rid of the Bedbugs. She was mad. I would be too. She claims it took her 12 years to grow the dreadlocks and she thinks it’s worth $50k in “damages”. You can read the original article about the woman who sued Holiday Inn, when she had to cut her hair because of Bedbugs in her hotel room… AT THIS LINK.
All we know is what was reported, but there are some common sense problems with this story. Lets take them one at a time, in no particular order.
Every human’s reaction to […]
Chicago is faithfully on the “Top 10” most BedBug Infested Cities list each year. Complaints to landlords of apartment buildings are the #1 renter’s gripe, so [after talking about it for years], there is a new “BedBug Law”.
The Chicago City Council Health Committee has approved a proposal that would allow the city to fine landlords up to $2,000 a day for failing to take “reasonable” steps to eradicate bedbug infestations in specific units or entire buildings.
The early versions on the proposed law were opposed by the Chicago Association of Realtors because it didn’t outline tenant responsibilities. 31st ward Alderman Ray Suarez inserted some of the requested amendments and it looks like everyone is “happy”. [if the word “happy” is ever truly included in a conversation about BedBugs.]
The new version of the law is clearer about what tenants need to do in the way of early detection and prevention, while giving landlords a bit more time to respond to complaints. While it is difficult [actually almost impossible] to place “blame” for any specific BedBug infestation, this new law gives Judges more power, and more discretion in determining monetary damage awards to tenants and control of evictions or other retaliation against a tenant who reports or complains about infestations.
Mr BedBug is glad to see a balanced law, protecting both the tenants AND the landlords. Good laws don’t exist in many cities and states. Most BedBug infestations begin when tenants bring them into a building, but assigning “blame” is nearly impossible. Landlord are rightly frustrated with repeat infestations. The goal should be a BedBug-free building. The more argueing done about […]
There is a scene in the Steve Martin comedy movie [called “The Jerk”] inwhich the character [Navin R. Johnson] is overly-excited by the arrival of the new phonebook. He thinks he is “somebody”, because his name is in print. The old saying, “any publicity is good publicity” does NOT always apply….. like when the new annual “Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA” list is published.
Contrary to what “Navin” believes [“This is the kind of spontaneous publicity that “makes people”] most Mayors, Chambers of Commerce and City Health Departments would rather NOT be recognized for the inglorious achievement of being on the list, but there they are. Both Orkin and Terminex play this game with PR/news releases as a way to hype the franchise pest control services they sell. The list are not really very scientific, but actually based of the number of service calls received in each city. This introduces reporting variables that have nothing to do with the level of BedBug infestations, but lets allow them to have their “fun” at the expensive of Municipal reputation all across the USA.
Here is the Top 50 Most Bed Bug Infested Cities List [per the newest Orkin press release.]
1. Chicago Il (moving up +1 spot to be the New #1, like Casey Kasum used to say)
2. Detroit MI (up +1)
3. Los Angeles Calif (up +2)
4. Denver Colo (holding steady at #4)
5. Cincinnati Ohio (down the list -4 places, but everyone else in Ohio is “catching-up” fast. )
6. Columbus, Ohio (still ranked #6, but workin’ hard to break that Top 5 goal.) […]
