BedBugs in Denver close West High School

Denver is on the list of the “Top 10 BedBug infested cities”, so it is no wonder that they’ve been found at West High School. BedBugs are “hitch-hikers”, so they will cling to any fabric that smells like a human…. moving from place to place, looking for the next meal. That meal is YOU, because the only food source for a BedBug is human blood.

BedBugs move from place to place looking for a reliable, convenient meal and a place to breed, just like humans. Robert Hancock, Professor at Metropolitan State University tells Jaclyn Allen of ABC7 News the story. The only solution to a BedBug infestation is to avoid the area, then work to KILL the BedBugs. Repellant sprays and 1/2 measures do NOT work. One single female BedBug can restart an infestation, so all the students and parents should be aware and learn what BedBugs look like. Watch for the signs of BedBug bites too, since there is no way to know how long the BedBugs were in West High School, before they were discovered. Small red insect-bite-mark are the first sign of a new infestation in your home. It’s important to take action, as soon as you suspect a BedBug infestation. It’s also important to know that BedBugs can be anywhere. They arrived at West High School from someone’s clothing or bookbag. They can leave and follow any child or teacher home, using the same travel-method.

Professor Hancock is correct. A school isn’t an ideal home for BedBugs, so they will look for a transport-host to help them travel to a new better “home”. Bedbugs […]

Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA

There is a scene in the Steve Martin comedy movie [called “The Jerk”] inwhich the character [Navin R. Johnson] is overly-excited by the arrival of the new phonebook. He thinks he is “somebody”, because his name is in print. The old saying, “any publicity is good publicity” does NOT always apply….. like when the new annual “Top 50 Most BedBug Infested Cities in the USA” list is published.

Contrary to what “Navin” believes [“This is the kind of spontaneous publicity that “makes people”] most Mayors, Chambers of Commerce and City Health Departments would rather NOT be recognized for the inglorious achievement of being on the list, but there they are. Both Orkin and Terminex play this game with PR/news releases as a way to hype the franchise pest control services they sell. The list are not really very scientific, but actually based of the number of service calls received in each city. This introduces reporting variables that have nothing to do with the level of BedBug infestations, but lets allow them to have their “fun” at the expensive of Municipal reputation all across the USA.

Here is the Top 50 Most Bed Bug Infested Cities List [per the newest Orkin press release.]

1. Chicago Il (moving up +1 spot to be the New #1, like Casey Kasum used to say)
2. Detroit MI (up +1)
3. Los Angeles Calif (up +2)
4. Denver Colo (holding steady at #4)
5. Cincinnati Ohio (down the list -4 places, but everyone else in Ohio is “catching-up” fast. )
6. Columbus, Ohio (still ranked #6, but workin’ hard to break that Top 5 goal.) […]

Bedbugs in Colorado Springs keep tenants / landlords at war

2012 is turning into the “Year of the BedBug”. If this doesn’t sound like “good news” you are not alone. the increase in the number of cases of BedBugs in Colorado Springs has gotten us on the “Top 100 Most BedBug Infested Cities” list and created lots of stress for those looking for apartments in the ‘Spings and Pueblo areas. BedBugs are becoming a national problem. Any major city you think of has got them, to one degree or another. The key to avoiding BedBugs in knowledge and awareness. [ www.FLfresh.com has an extensive library of “vetted” and entomologically-correct BedBug information, plus practical tips on how to avoid Bedbugs and -hot to clean an infestation, if they do get into your home or apartment. Links and details below]

Lets start with…
What are BedBugs? The Colorado Springs Gazette had a nice article about Bedbugs.[click: http://gazette.com/article/136888

The short answer is:
BedBugs are insect-vampires, unlike any other insect. They ONLY feed on human-blood. Roaches, ants, and other insects eat filth, grime or other bugs. Bedbugs are the only one with a “taste” for humans. We didn’t forget mosquitos and ticks. They will eat ANY warm-blooded animal, which is why THEY can spread disease. Bedbugs don’t.

BedBugs go thru 5 “life-stages” before becoming adult pest. From newly hatched to adults, they need to feed to live and they work VERY hard to stay close to “tasty-humans”. Each feeding will leave a red-welt on your skin [Each person’s exact reaction varies] They will look like an over-sized mosquito bite […]

BedBugs in the Longmont Colo. Public library creates an interesting sign.

BedBug News Reports.com discusses a LOT of press pieces about BedBugs. You all know that by now. It’s just what we do, but our interest is sometimes distracted by the “other” news included in the reporting the local folks do about Bedbugs. This report from Cori Rose at KUSA Channel 9News is an example.

This is one of the most [ho-humm, no excitement here] BedBug reports I’ve seen in a while. As I’ve mentioned on several occasions the “TV Consultants” love BedBug stories and tell local News Directors around the country that these stories are ratings “gold”. Nothing gets viewers to stay-up late for the local news like “BedBugs are in the Longmont Library. Stay tuned to find out which one”. LOL. In this case it looks like everyone got it about “right”. [except for the “door sign” I’ll mention in a minute. ]

Judith Anderson is the Longmont Public Library Director and she seems to have been well prepared. [I guess BedBugs in the Denver Library was a learning experience] Her staff knew what to look for, they had a plan in place and everyone just moved on. Good Job all around.

9 News reporter Cori Rose seemed to have the details down too, [unlike some local reporters we have “called out” for repeating myths and folklore]. The BIG news of this story is NOT the BedBugs, but the sign on the door. You’ve got to […]
